How to crop a PDF (and what cropping actually does)
Cropping a PDF — trimming away margins, scanner borders or everything except the part you care about — takes about ten seconds once you know the drag-a-box trick. It's also one of the most misunderstood PDF edits, because cropping hides rather than removes. Both halves matter, so here's the how and the honest what.
Crop a PDF in your browser
Open the PDF cropper and drop your file in. It loads on your own device — nothing uploads.
Drag a box over the part of the page you want to keep. The readout shows the trimmed size as you drag.
Choose this page or all pages — for a scan with the same wasted border on every page, one box fixes the whole document.
Apply and download. Every edit is undoable, so a bad box costs nothing.
What cropping is good for
Scans with big borders. Phone-scanned and flatbed pages usually carry a dark or empty frame; trimming it makes the document read cleaner and zoom tighter.
Reading on small screens. Academic papers and reports have generous print margins. Cropping them means the text fills a tablet or e-reader screen instead of floating in white space.
Keeping one region. A chart, a table, a form section — crop to just that area, then the trimmed page prints or embeds without the clutter around it.
Print artefacts. Crop marks and bleed edges on a designer-supplied PDF trim away cleanly.
The honest part: cropping hides, it doesn't delete
A PDF crop changes which part of the page viewers display — the content outside the box is still inside the file, and someone with an editor can un-crop it. That's fine for margins and borders. It is the wrong tool for hiding a name, an account number or anything sensitive: for that you want redaction, which genuinely destroys the covered content rather than tucking it out of sight. pixelpix's crop panel says this to your face, because a surprising number of tools don't.
Will cropping shrink the file?
Usually only a little — the hidden content still takes up bytes. If your real goal is a smaller file, crop first if you like, then run the PDF compressor (which re-encodes the images that actually make PDFs heavy), or split out just the pages you need.
